More and more people are getting concerned with the health of their skin. The proliferation of skin care products in the grocery aisles is testimony to this fact.
In addition, a lot of celebrity dermatologists have opened their cosmetic clinics to provide skin care services and, when necessary, medical intervention for severe acne conditions.
There are two particularly nasty severe acne cases that every person must be aware of: acne fulminans and gram-negative folliculitis.
The first of the two severe acne cases is acne fulminans. Also known as acne maligna, this skin disease appears as tremendous lesions and pustules in the facial, torso and back areas of the body.
Traditionally present more in male adolescents, the disease has progressed to infect females and sometimes, even children. Medical treatment is often necessary to completely heal the wounds left by infected pustules and nodules.
These treatments include injection of antibiotics, oral medication and continuous skin exfoliation. These treatments work best only if the disease is diagnosed properly during its early stages. Late stages of the disease, however, may require surgery and skin grafting.
This means extended exposure of the infected areas; therefore, extreme dosage of antibiotics will also be necessary.
The second severe acne disease is called gram-negative folliculitis. Commonly known as barber’s itch, this skin disease is found mostly in the person’s scalp.
The skin holding the hair follicles in place becomes infected and starts to itch. This is the early stage of the disease. The infection is mostly bacterial in nature and in some cases can be caused by fungus as well. Therefore, anti-fungal and anti-bacterial treatment is necessary to combat this disease.
In its extreme form, hair loss can occur, making this severe acne condition one of the most feared by males and females alike.
Extreme acne diseases require continuous medical treatment regimen and should only be treated by registered and duly licensed dermatologists
Incomplete medical treatments will only worsen the situation as these diseases are characterized by bacterial and fungal infections, which may become antibiotics-tolerant and will therefore be almost impossible to eradicate. Advances in medical technology have made these diseases easily treatable and manageable.
When these forms of severe acne aren’t treated or cured, they usually leave behind acne scars that cause extreme depression. In order to remove acne scars, you must first know how to attack the root cause of acne.
